In Muiden you will find cozy cafes and restaurants around the Grote Zeesluis. In the summer, the terraces provide a spectacular view on boats mooring in the lock. From Muiden there is a ferry service to fortress island Pampus (UNESCO World Heritage). Pampus was constructed as part of the defense line of Amsterdam against attacks from the Zuiderzee. It is built on a former sandplate where VOC-ships had to wait for high tide before they could enter the Amstel. You can take a tour on the island or wander through the fort by yourself. The feeling of yesteryear can be experienced during a sailing trip on a clipper or tjalk of the Bruine Vloot. The Muiderslot (Amsterdam Castle) is definitely worth a visit. It was built around 1285 by Count Floris the Fifth. Another famous resident was P.C. Hooft. In the castle you can feel the atmosphere of the Golden Age in stylish decorated rooms and gardens. In short, there is plenty to see and experience in Muiden.
